A horizontal accordion fold which folds down as the text and footsteps ascend. Made with ‘foot-mono-printing’ using Sumi ink, wax rubbing, and a wash of turmeric/PVA solution. The wax rubbing matrix is from the text of the concrete Chief Seattle (or Sealth) Memorial surrounding his gravesite in Suquamish (aka Washington State). The paper is unknown, procured from the vintage paper cabinet at the Bundesakademie für Kulturelle Bildung in Wolfenbüttel, Germany.

The source of the English and Lushootseed texts are from Chief Sealth’s 1854 oration in response to the USA’s offer to buy Suquamish territory. Numerous versions of this response exist, the quote on this memorial is an excerpt.

“Even the rocks thrill with memories of past events. The very dust beneath your feet responds more lovingly to our footsteps because it is the ashes of our ancestors, the soil is rich with the lives of our kindred.”

The colophon is on the verso.
