“Speech of Figures” is a hand-painted book that was produced from a mother-daughter collaboration. Sofia Szamosi writes about the text that she and her mother “spent several years collecting the phrases, overheard from friends, family or in popular culture, and then I put them together and illustrated them.” Featured in the book are quasi-literal illustrations of popular figures of speech that people, especially women, use to describe how they feel about their bodies, like “I feel like a whale” or “My shoulders are like a linebacker”.
