Zine Jams in Public Parks
2021 - present
We love zine making of all kinds, but creating zines in public parks is special to us.
There’s a long history tying bookmaking to nature. For us, each zine that’s crafted once started out as a tree that was made into paper. Creating zines in public parks connects us to that cycle of life. Zine-making workshops in public natural spaces are a perfect place for life and wellness processing.
Zine Jams are FREE, drop-in workshops in NYC public parks. Recommended for ages 5 and up, Zine Jams are accessible to all and are facilitated by two zine creators and educators from Booklyn. Through visual, tactile, and writing prompts everyone can create their own one-sheet zine. You can even scan and print copies to share with family and friends. Don’t forget to take a free copy of our Abridged Education Manual. We had copies to distribute at every Zine Jam!
We began Zine Jams in June 2021 during the COVID pandemic as a way to find community outdoors and make handmade books together. Since then we’ve activated Zine Jams at Sunset Park, Herbert von King Park, Fort Greene Park, Prospect Park, and Washington Park, all located in Brooklyn, NY.
This program was made possible in part by funding from the New York City Department of Cultural Affairs, in collaboration with the New York City Council.
Booklyn’s programs are made possible by the New York State Council on the Arts with the support of the Office of the Governor and the New York State Legislature.
