SIGN UP HERE Get directionsSpring Break Zine Camp is full days of hands-on zine and bookmaking activities for kids aged 7-10 at Old Stone House (in Washington Park & JJ Byrne Playground).
Join us as we explore the world of hands-on DIY book and zine making using paper, scissors, gluesticks, stamps, markers, bone folders, photocopiers, coil-punch binders, staple binders, needle-and-thread binding, and a lot more! We’ll teach techniques for reusing and recycling household materials and will explore some creative folding techniques.
We teach zine-making as a community-centered practice, one that builds social-emotional learning, and teaches skill development for the creation of self-determined storytelling. During Zine Camp, your child will learn how to transform a single piece of paper into a “magic book”. They’ll learn to make their own sketchbooks out of recycled household materials. And we’ll explore collaborative storytelling techniques and create a class book, which we will edition together so that each child can bring home a copy.
Our unique curriculum is rooted in our Booklyn Education Manual, which is a free-to-download manual collectively created by NYC-based teaching artists and public school educators over 18 years.
Wait there’s more! We’ll also enjoy two artist visits from local NYC artists who work in the book format.
No experience is necessary, but an interest in crafts, artmaking, or books goes a long way at Zine Camp! Questions? Email us at [email protected].
Zine Camp is made possible by the New York State Council on the Arts with the support of the Office of the Governor and the New York State Legislature, and the New York City Department of Cultural Affairs, in partnership with the NY City Council.
