We make books to make change. We make books to make our voices heard.

In this series of three workshops, artist and educator María Verónica San Martín will teach bookmaking techniques that support personal and community storytelling for the Queer Detainee Empowerment Project (QDEP) community. Each workshop will provide the basic background, skills, and techniques for learners of all experience levels to express their ideas and create their own artists’ books while creating a space for the mutual exchange of information and experiences. By the end of each workshop, participants will create their own one-page book to take home with the possibility of contributing to a collaboratively-made “flag book.”

This is a free workshop. No experience is necessary. Materials and tools will be provided. There will be food and participants will receive a two-way Metrocard.

Create Your Own Artists’ Book is presented by Booklyn, Inc in collaboration with QDEP and Brooklyn Community Pride Center and is made possible in part by funds from the New York City Department of Cultural Affairs, in partnership with the NY City Council.

Booklyn’s programs are made possible by the New York State Council on the Arts with the support of the Office of the Governor and the New York State Legislature.

Spots are limited – to register, please send an email with your name and phone number to QDEP at [email protected]. You can also email QDEP if you have any questions or need more information.
