Wounded Knees is a collection of photographs by Marshall Weber and Tim Page that collide in a journey through colonial/post-colonial wars and illuminating global indigenous libration struggles.

Traveling around the world, Weber made rubbings from monuments/memorials, painted and inked the book’s pages, and then applied stencil calligraphy of a short poem.

This is book three in the “Remembrance and Resonance” series of artists’ books with Weber and Tim Page. Page is best known for his photographs from the Vietnam War. He is known for his courage, integrity, and recklessness. Page has received a Robert Capa Award and is one of the few civilians, non-American to receive the U.S. Purple Heart Medal.

Activist artist Ian Cozzins contributed the Chelsea Manning screen print. Isabelle Weber contributed the first-page oil painting. The cover is an over size Fujiflex print by Page with title from the Wounded Knee Massacre site on the Oglala and Lakota Sioux Pine Ridge Reservation in South Dakota.

There are also other texts from the Wounded Knee Massacre site, the Little Big Horn battleground in Crow Agency, MT, the Peace Memorial in Minneapolis, MN, the Rammytush Memorial in San Francisco, CA, and the ANZAC Memorial and other Aboriginal markers in Melbourne, Australia.

“You who are about to read, we salute you…”

Empire of Tears
built on salt bricks distilled from the centuries
of blood and salt drained
from mothers and children
and sons and daughters.

Who desired oceans of pain?
Who thrives on cruelty?
Who would deny love?

We brought the towers down upon ourselves
and turned the world to dust.

— Marshall Weber, 2017
