“At the beginning of Israel’s onslaught on Gaza in October 2023, it was clear this would be unlike any other assault on Palestinian life.

How long does it take us to turn the page on what we’ve seen, this cycle of seeing and unseeing, this violent cycle of a place surviving off its own blood and the blood of others, perpetuating narratives of victimhood, extermination and ghettoization, and through its actions, passing those narratives on to others.

What We Saw is both process and product, an attempt to chronicle the devastation. Why the concertina book? Both book and landscape, the concertina mirrors the vastness of the destruction and the overwhelming sense of helplessness its magnitude evokes. To draw is to see, to bear witness, but the book also holds a truth we can turn away from, close our eyes to, fold away what is unfolding before us. The repetition of imagery echoes the cyclical nature of violence in Israel-Palestine, asking how long we can continue to witness these horrors without concrete political action.”

Text reads: את המוות שראינו (Hebrew: The death we saw) We can not unsee. El abono de mi tierra es la sangre (Spanish: The compost of my land is blood). דם הוא דשן אדמתי (Hebrew: Blood is the compost of my land)
