This book was made for the cover of The Washington Post Magazine for an issue about the 14th amendment and its unwritten rights. The design team wanted to have one picture on the front of the magazine and when the reader flips the page, there is another cover with fallen words to suggest that many issues are interconnected with tenuous strings, showing how fragile the amendment can be.
The opened page is printed with the 14th amendment. Each letter is machine-embroidered and connected to a corresponding letter in the document. If a letter is pulled, it comes down. For the picture taking, they were secured with pieces of tape to stay in place. The design and ideas were in collaboration with the Washington Post Magazine designer, Marissa Vonesh.
