“This is a new series that has branched out of Scripta. Several years ago, I found cut branches on the street with beautiful leaves still attached. I took some leaves home and processed them to make leaf skeletons. I then bleached them and dyed them red, the color I consistently use in my work. I took pictures of them. They looked like blood vessels. The mechanism is very similar: how nutrition gets distributed through those matrixes. I wanted to do a duet with this using my stitching.
I love finding similarities between the human body and natural elements. It makes me feel close to nature and affirms that I am a part of the natural world. Plants lose their leaves in winter, but they come back in spring. This reminds me of a cycle of life. I am amazed by resilience. Through my work, I would like to draw energy from the natural world to suggest our physical and mental fragility and resilience.
I finally printed the enlarged image of the leaf skeleton, and with the layering of my stitching, I made a book.” — artist Rima Day
