This smaller format book is one of James Enos’s first artists’ book mash-ups. Enos meticulously remixes Mark Twain’s story of The Prince and The Pauper (as interpreted by various 1990s era animated films and picture book versions) with the dinosaur characters from Don Bluth’s The Land Before Time, the classic animated film that spawned a decades-long franchise. This mash-up provides an escalation of the somewhat ridiculous story and the illustrations only contribute to the hilarity. This rare, complete, artwork is an important early predecessor of both Enos’s later large-scale artwork and his maturing talent for clever and socially perceptive rewrites of stories from pop culture. Very few examples of Enos’s earlier work have survived and this particular example has been kept in its original condition with very little conservation. The book is exceptionally well preserved and functional.
