E/v/e/r/y W/a/v/e captures the fluidity and movement of the ocean, symbolizing migration’s ever-changing nature and the resilience required to navigate it. The text comes from the poem of the same title written by the artist, in English and Spanish.
“I began this exploration through digital photography and personal archiving in south Florida, where I was raised. The ongoing body of work uses the representation of water, specifically the ocean, as a psychic and spiritual force within the context of migration. The poem was developed after spending time in the ocean and is a meditation on the spiritual potentials of migration and everyday life. I’m interested in the distortion and abstraction of the photographic image as I manipulate, translate and iterate it across mediums. I began to digitally manipulate the image by translating it from color to black and white and then expanding the image and allowing it to pixelate. I print the images on painted mylar surfaces, then scan them, and print them again over other mylar sheets with painted surfaces. This process allows me to think about the fluid and slippery nature of memory and time, one that is often obfuscated or opaque, and remembered incompletely.”
This artist book features laserjet prints on mylar. The mylar comes from former paintings that were cut down to sheet size, and were layered with acrylic, ink, and spray paint.
