Co2 flags are re-designed nation-state flags that address the climate crisis. Some flags highlight the countries that have historically emitted the most greenhouse gases (GHG) into the atmosphere (the U.S., China). Others highlight countries that are at extreme risk to their populations becoming climate refugees (the Maldives). Other flags highlight specific climate issues like deforestation (Brazil and Indonesia). Some flags highlight petrostates, whereas others highlight climate justice movements (the text of Greta Thunberg’s sign “Skolstrejk för Klimatet” / “School Strike for the Climate”).
Collectively, these re-designed flags are a call to action. A call for climate justice and zero net emissions. The last flag in the series is a re-designed United Nations (UN) flag. The re-designed flag shows the United Nations flag not with a map of the earth in the middle, but the Co2 symbol instead, advocating that addressing the climate crisis should be the primary focus of all nations.
