James Enos (b.1987) is a prolific writer and illustrator who creates large-scale, mixed-media books using found materials including paper, poster board, maps, plywood and more. James often works in series, creating multiple volumes that are bound together into a single, enormous book.
James designs and executes each book from scratch. His extraordinary process includes binding, researching, writing, and hand-drawing illustrations— many of which fold-out and can extend upwards of 275 cm. Each story is first composed through completion on a Royal BETA 200 electronic typewriter, then illustrated chronologically and taped into place with scotch tape as artwork is ready. James’ methodical illustration process includes acute attention to the direction and layering of pen strokes and the use of Nitrile gloves to achieve line continuation across large paper without smudging.
His stories weave together to form a collection inspired by his life experiences, picture books adapted from major motion pictures, and pop-culture of the late 80s and early 90s, among others. Through storytelling, James expresses his wry sense of humor, intuitive understanding of plot and syntax, and extensive knowledge of literature and pop culture.
This book has been bound by Rory Sparks. Unfolded at it’s largest point it measures 35 x 212 inches.
