“Julia Hall and Chrissy Leggio are art school kids from Philly. They paint and like to have lofty conversations about art when they’re stoned. They found out about Christo and Jeanne-Claude’s Gates project the summer before it went up and thought it would be fun to skulk around Central Park while Christo and his workers were setting up. They stumbled upon Christo’s website and filled out job applications. After a few months of wondering, Julia and Chrissy received emails congratulating them on their acceptance to the project. The following is an account of their week and a half working for Christo and Jeanne-Claude, earning $6.25 an hour at the very bottom of the art world food chain.”
— Introduction to Slaves of Christo

Slaves of Christo is the result of work by Julia Hall, Chrissy Leggio, and Booklyn in unauthorized collaboration with Christo and Jeanne-Claude. It is comprised of journals written by Hall and Leggio while they worked on the installation of Christo and Jeanne-Claude’s Gates project in New York City’s Central Park. The journals serve as a damning yet guileless critique of the entire venture, appropriately accompanied by Peter Spagnuolo’s eloquent and equally critical afterward. Slaves of Christo follows in the post-modern tradition of irreverent collaboration, following the same impulse that led Marcel Duchamp to draw a mustache on the Mona Lisa.
