We’re covering our history on Booklyn Calling!

Ever wondered how Booklyn came to be? Artist and founding member C. K. Wilde joins us on a trip to the ‘90s to uncover our history. From the book mobile that started things off, to the librarians who helped us make our way, and how a misread exit sign became our name.

Christopher Karl Wilde was born in 1972. Wilde was raised in Madison, Wisconsin, USA. At an early age his proclivities for art making were encouraged and enthusiastically supported. After going to The George School, a Quaker boarding school, he went on to study Philosophy and Art at the University of Wisconsin. In 1993 founded Artichoke Yink Press, an imprint for artists books; A.Y.P. has published over 125 titles to date with many artists and writers. Wilde moved to New York City to teach collage and book arts at The Pratt Institute, The Cooper Union, and The Center for the Book Arts. In 1998, Wilde co-founded The Booklyn Artists Alliance, in Greenpoint, Brooklyn, New York. Wilde is represented by Rosamund Felsen Gallery in Los Angeles.

Booklyn Calling is made possible in part by funds from the New York City Department of Cultural Affairs, in partnership with the NY City Council.

Zine-Making Party in the Library!

We love making zines anywhere, but doing so in public libraries is especially meaningful.

Zines are accessible tools for literacy, storytelling, and community connection. By hosting Zine Jams in libraries, we help shift them from places where information is consumed to places where it’s created—where patrons become authors, not just readers.

Zine Jams are free, drop-in workshops for ages 5+, led by Booklyn, Inc. educators. With visual, tactile, and writing prompts, anyone can make a zine. Free copies of our Abridged Education Manual are available at every event.

Saturday, May 31, 1-4pm
Central Library (BPL)
415 Flatbush Ave, Brooklyn, NY 11238

Saturday, June 7, 1-4pm
Bedford Library (BPL)
496 Franklin Ave, Brooklyn, NY 11238

Saturday, June 14, 2-4pm
Sunset Park Library (BPL)
5108 4th Ave, Brooklyn, NY 11220

Started in June 2021 during the pandemic, Zine Jams highlight the importance of public space and the power of making things together. Libraries are essential community hubs, and Zine Jams help reimagine them as spaces of creativity, authorship, and resistance to misinformation.

This program was made possible in part by funding from the New York City Department of Cultural Affairs, in collaboration with the New York City Council.

Booklyn’s programs are made possible by the New York State Council on the Arts with the support of the Office of the Governor and the New York State Legislature.

Zines + Garden Vibes = Yes Please!

To celebrate the creativity, growth, and future of the Trans formative Schools community, Booklyn is partnering with them to present a zine workshop series centered on the theme of transformation.

Zines are grassroots, handmade books—created by individuals using basic tools like paper, scissors, pens, and powerful ideas. They’re a way to tell personal and collective stories, explore ideas, and share knowledge from the ground up.

In this two-part series, Booklyn educators will teach two techniques: the one-page zine and the flag book. We’ll bring a wide variety of creative materials—rubber stamps, markers, stickers, collage materials, and decorative papers. For those who want a little structure, we’ll have ready-made zine templates available. Or feel free to go freestyle and make your own from scratch.

These are free, all-ages workshops facilitated by Booklyn educators in collaboration with Trans formative Schools and hosted at La Plaza Cultural Community Garden in the Lower East Side of NYC.

Sunday, June 1 & Sunday, June 8

Who is invited? Everyone! Come with friends or on your own to meet new people. Representatives from organizations are welcome to bring flyers or postcards to share your work and help others connect with your cause.

Our Organizers: The Gender-expansive Families Propaganda Party is organized by Parents of Gender Expansive Kids (POGEK) @ps39pogek at PS39 together with @interferencearchive and additional support from @ps39pa@booklynart@textileartscenter and @trans.formative.schools 💕

What is a propaganda party? It’s a gathering where organizations, activists, artists, and community members come together to create and share t-shirts, posters, buttons and other materials while connecting with one another in a supportive environment.

Why “propaganda”? “Propaganda,” shares roots with “propagate,” and refers to information, ideas, or images shared in support of a cause. While this word has taken on negative connotations in modern times, we’re reclaiming it! Our daily lives are saturated with supposedly “neutral” materials that implicitly support existing power structures. We use the word “propaganda” because this work is not neutral—we’re proudly supporting our gender-expansive community.
