Steven Johnson Leyba is an artist, painter, fine art bookmaker, author, spoken-word performer, filmmaker, and musician who paints experimental portraits and creates handmade books. He began making books in 1989 and has since created 13 unique works. Embracing the reverence of the natural world as did his Apache ancestors, Leyba seeks to make books that liberate, that defy control and censorship, and that reclaim the natural world in all its fecundity. His worldview and art-making focus on the micro and macrocosms in nature, reclaiming the forgotten and challenging given symbols. Working primarily in oil and acrylic collage, he embellishes his painted books with glass beads and organic materials such as dirt, coffee, hair, leaves, molasses, blood, urine, and insects in order to literally put the landscape and his DNA into his books.
