Sara Parkel is a book artist and printmaker. Her work is included in several public and private collections from the Walker Art Center Library in Minneapolis to the National Art Library at the Victoria and Albert Museum in London, among others. She has worked professionally as a letterpress printer and bookbinder and has taught classes in bookbinding, book arts, and letterpress printing. She is the proprietor of Filter Press and is one of the founding group members of Booklyn Artists’s Alliance.
About my work:
As an artist, I draw inspiration from environmental issues, global culture, and politics and use a variety of printmaking techniques—letterpress, relief printmaking, collotype, monoprint, lithography, as well as drawing and collage. My Midwestern roots inform my work, which focuses on my appreciation for nature and straightforward design. My goal is simple––the seamless balance of materials, structure, and content. Using printmaking and artist books as a means to convey my ideas is important. It allows me to work on multiple levels simultaneously (sculptural, sequential, and visual), while creating a personal experience for the viewer.
