From 1964 to 1966 I lived in Stockholm, Sweden, and traveled widely in Europe—Oslo, Copenhagen, Paris, Madrid, Barcelona, Venice, Austria, Switzerland, Greece, Turkey, Moscow, and Leningrad. Most of my pictures show people and human behavior: hippies, protests, sex, drugs, and music. Personalities include Martin Luther King, Mariam Makeba, Bob Dylan, Ornette Coleman, Sonny Rollins, Boz Skaggs, Joan Baez, Duke Ellington, and Ella Fitzgerald. From 1966 to 1978 I lived in Manhattan. From 1969 to 1973 I was staff photographer for the Manhattan Tribune. My first book, Sidetripping (introduction by William S. Burroughs) was critically acclaimed, and my photos of slums, pollution, education, social problems, and social change appeared in over a hundred textbooks. I also photographed the first gay pride demonstrations and covered downtown Manhattan’s music and art scenes. In 1969 I photographed the Woodstock Festival and the Watkins Glen Festival. In 1970 I took the first of fifteen annual trips to New Orleans to photograph Mardi Gras celebrations. I also shot in Italy, Spain, Greece, Germany, Morocco. Celebrities include Luis Buñuel, Bernardo Bertolucci, Abbie Hoffman, Al Green, Etta James, Gil Evans, Dion, Spider Webb, Jimmy Page, Colleen Dewhurst, John Lahr, Jean-Pierre Rampal, Paul Krassner, Peter Goldmark, Ted Wilson, Alan Dershowitz, and Nelson Rockefeller. From 1978 to 1987 I lived in Manhattan and Woodstock, New York. I did more editorial and textbook photography and received my third New York State Arts Council fellowship to publish my extended photo essay, Wall Street. That book won the Leica Medal of Excellence for Outstanding Humanistic Photojournalism. Photos from this period include protests, nature, gender issues, erotica, tattooing, piercing, and other forms of body art. Personalities include Larry Clark, Ed Sanders, Annie Sprinkle, Fakir Musafar, Marco Vassi, Lyle Tuttle, Cliff Raven, Michael O’Donoghue, Ira Cohen, and Quentin Crisp. I’ve lived in San Francisco since 1988. From 1998 to 2010 I was a staff photographer for Skin & Ink magazine, and my photos have appeared in many textbooks, magazines, newspapers, and on posters and postcards. Eight books of my fine-art photographs have been published, and my work has been exhibited and published throughout the world. My coverage of body modification, fetish, and radical-sex communities is unmatched. I also photographed many artistic nude studies. During this period I also photographed in Los Angeles, New York, Seattle, Hawaii, Mexico, Vancouver, Copenhagen, and Thailand. Personalities include Lawrence Ferlinghetti, Michael McClure, Jack Micheline, Carol Queen, Jello Biafra, Ron Turner, Anna Banana, Herb Gold, Charles Henri Ford, Bradley Smith, Ruth Bernard, and others. “Gatewood picked up where Arbus left off.” —R. Crumb “Photographers, unlike fiction writers, see what is real (sometimes beyond) and photograph it. Some manage to look into the hidden crevices of life, mysteries of the human soul, and show us what they saw. ‘Bon Voyage,’ and be glad that Gatewood took this trip for you.” —Cornell Capa, International Center of Photography “Charles Gatewood’s photography transcends fashion, expectation, and prejudice. His genre defies description: it is both anthropological documentation and visual documentary, both raw imagery and erotic photography.” —Skin Two “In each of Gatewood’s portraits, the subject looks directly at the camera, as though posing for a snapshot. But the result is something out of Arbus and Brassai squeezed through a hip cultural awareness. One is not surprised to learn Gatewood was an anthropologist before turning to the camera” —Woodstock Times
